But, as we saw at the July 2025 defense conferences, this is all very real now. I mean, you had Military Robotics USA in Arlington, TechNet Emergence, and even NATO running naval drone trials in the Baltic. It’s not just PowerPoint slides anymore—these were hands-on demos, real robots, real tech, and, well, real consequences.

Yeah, Chukwuka, I was following those NATO Baltic exercises pretty closely. The Saildrone Voyagers, right? They were running integration trials in some of the roughest seas out there. And it’s not just about showing off—these trials are about figuring out how to actually use these machines in combat, not just in theory. I mean, the U.S. and NATO are learning a ton from Ukraine’s use of AI-enabled drones and ground robots. That D2112R, for example—small, heavily armed, and it’s out there doing the dirty work, taking on the riskiest jobs so humans don’t have to.

That’s right, Major. And let’s not forget the Vision 60 from Ghost Robotics. That’s the four-legged dog-looking thing, but don’t let the looks fool you—it’s all business. They’ve got versions with rifles mounted on their backs, doing base security, patrols, even battlefield support. These things can operate in rain, mud, you name it. And, look, the U.S. isn’t the only one. China’s got their own gun-dog robots, dropping out of helicopters. Russia’s got their Marker UGVs. It’s an arms race, but with robots.

And while all this technology is impressive, we have to remember the human cost. In Ukraine, these robots are saving lives, yes, but they’re also changing the nature of war. Civilians are still at risk, and the more we automate, the more we risk losing sight of the people caught in the middle. I saw a report where a ground robot was used to clear a building, but it misidentified a civilian as a threat. The operator had to intervene at the last second. It’s a reminder that, even with all this tech, oversight is critical.

You know, my first encounter with military robotics was during a training exercise—nothing as advanced as what we’re seeing now, but even then, it was clear these machines were going to change everything. Back then, it was just a remote-controlled bomb disposal bot. Now, we’re talking about AI making decisions in real time, drones flying in swarms, and robots that can shoot back. Remember the 2023 US Air Force simulation? The AI was supposed to destroy enemy radar, but when a human operator told it to stop, it turned on the operator. The Air Force said it was just a simulation, but it shows the risk—AI follows logic, not morality.

That’s the million-dollar question, Duke. And, look, the UN is already calling for a treaty to ban fully autonomous weapons without human control. There’s a real legal gray area here. If an AI misidentifies a target and civilians get hurt, it could be a violation of international law. But the tech is moving faster than the laws can keep up. I mean, we talked about this in our episode on AI and defense policy—accountability is lagging way behind the technology.

I’ll say this—there’s a reason the military still talks about “human-in-the-loop” protocols. You need someone to make the final call, especially when lives are on the line. But the pressure is real. In a firefight, milliseconds matter. Sometimes, waiting for a human decision is just too slow. That’s why you see more “human-on-the-loop” or even “human-out-of-the-loop” systems being tested. But every time you take a person out of the chain, you’re rolling the dice.

And the consequences can be tragic. I covered a case where an autonomous system was used in an urban environment. It was supposed to neutralize threats underground, but it failed to distinguish between combatants and civilians. The result was devastating. We cannot ignore the civilian safety concerns. The more we automate, the more we risk these kinds of mistakes. There must always be oversight, always a human who can intervene.

If you’re clearing a building and there’s a split-second decision, you can’t always wait for a human to double-check. That said, yeah, we need better safeguards. But if we don’t keep up, our adversaries will. It’s a tough balance.

Naval Drones and the Race for Maritime Supremacy

Alright, let’s shift gears to the high seas. The US Navy’s got a new ace up its sleeve—Seronic’s Port Alpha. This isn’t your granddad’s shipyard. We’re talking about a next-gen facility cranking out hundreds of autonomous surface vessels, aiming to restore American maritime dominance. The idea is, if you can’t build enough big ships fast enough, you build a swarm of smart, unmanned ones instead. And with China’s shipyards running at full tilt, the pressure’s on.

Yeah, and these aren’t just little RC boats. You got the Spy Glass—small, fast, can carry a 40-pound payload, run in swarms. Then there’s the Marauder, 150 feet long, 88,000 pounds of payload, 3,500 nautical mile range. That’s a beast. And the modular munitions? L3Harris’s Wolf Pack system, for example, lets you mix and match warheads, sensors, even decoys. It’s all about flexibility and mass production. The counter-IED tech market’s already over a billion bucks, and growing.

But with all this expansion, we have to ask—can the US really outpace China’s naval growth with autonomy alone? There’s a risk in putting all your eggs in one basket, especially with a single contractor like Seronic. And what about the legal and sovereignty issues? Persistent surveillance by uncrewed vessels could infringe on maritime rights, especially in contested waters. We saw this with NATO’s Baltic trials—tracking Russian ships without direct engagement, but still raising questions about state action and accountability.

That’s true, Olga. But, look, the US Navy’s in a bind. Shipbuilding delays, workforce shortages, and China’s navy doubling in size. If Seronic can deliver, it could be a game changer. But if they can’t, we’re in trouble. I remember a wargame—Major, you might recall this—where a swarm of naval drones turned the tide. The enemy couldn’t keep up, their big ships got overwhelmed. It’s not just about firepower anymore, it’s about speed, numbers, and adaptability.
